“Ohhhh Noooo…not again!” I grumble to myself. “Why doesn’t anyone ever want to meet me?” ” I’m a really nice person, I run a great company, how come I never get a Meeting?” Darn…
MatchMakers can result in powerful business and life changing opportunities. You know it CAN happen. You’ve heard the stories, spoke with others who landed huge contracts. “If I only had a shot at it, the procurement officer would be so delighted they picked me.”
You spend countless hours preparing an awesome profile. It’s loaded with media, infographics and content that took days. You follow the complex requirements. You attended the pre-conference seminars. Spend days looking at Corporate websites, study their procurement programs. Sign up on twenty vendor registries.
You tweak your profile every day, you’re certain it will stand out above your competitors. OK yes, you’re proud of your work, your due diligence, now, you’re ready for the Corporates to get in line to meet YOU!
Twice a day you log on to the event website. Your heart pounds as you click the “appointments” button. You wait as it loads… “0 Meetings.” “Sigh”… You double check to make sure your profile is visible and uploaded. “Huh?” Maybe you forgot to check a box. “Nope,” everything is set correctly.
You wait… eagerly. You try hard not to take it personal. You consider the time and effort spent preparing, putting together a stellar profile so, why doesn’t anyone want to meet you?
The deadline arrives. You check one final time, you just KNOW someone has scheduled a Meeting. You click the button….”0 Appointments.” Well, that’s it then.
So, you’re crushed. Rejection hurts. Commend yourself for doing the hard work. DO NOT take it personally. It’s not about you or the wonderful business you built. You’ve worked 16-hours a day for years, you ARE the best at what you do. You ARE successful, no doubt, or you wouldn’t be attending such a prestigious conference. “Right?”
Try to understand that Corporate Members have a specific list of products and services they need to fulfill. They’re under pressure to locate the fewest number of vendors with the widest capabilities. Manufacturing, various global services, big dollar or unique value items are highly sought after. It’s about corporate competitiveness. I’m sure many Corporates would relish hearing about your business but, at THIS conference they’re looking at next year’s procurement needs.
Even though I owned a successful, global company for twenty-years, had several Fortune 500 contracts, I was never chosen. NEVER, NOT ONCE. Ambiguous NAICS Codes and other measly details hurt my chances. They simply couldn’t find me. I’ve registered and attended about 75 MatchMakers since 1998. National, International, Regional and Local including at least 12 WBENC National Conferences. If you’re disappointed and discouraged… hey, you’re not alone.
Please keep trying. Remind yourself it only takes one meeting to alter the trajectory of your life and business. Keep attending conferences. Although I’ve never been chosen I’ve landed Fortune 500 contracts simply by showing up and participating in the conference. Just be yourself and genuinely enjoy getting to know other attendees.
As a seasoned MatchMaker rejectee, I’ve had a lot of practice consoling myself. Take time when the MatchMakers are taking place, set a goal of meeting two new contacts each hour. Ask each person about themselves. Have a mental list of questions. Sidestep walking by or glancing over your shoulder in the rooms where the Meetings are happening… Stay Positive!
So, here I am again. Another WBENC National Conference. I’ve done my best to submit Corporates a compelling profile, interesting content, infographics and media. The deadline passed TODAY, I didn’t land a meeting, AGAIN.
Look for me, I’m the one walking the halls alone again! I really DO want to meet YOU, learn about your company, perhaps connect you with someone who needs your precise product! Smile and have a great time, believe in yourself and the law of attraction– Who needs a 1:1 MatchMaker Meeting anyway? Your optimistic attitude and joyful spirit will keep you plenty busy creating new, extraordinary connections.
